I recently came across a webhost called A Small Orange. They looked very professional and their packages looked almost too good to be true. After much thought (especially considering that I had bad experience with a previous unreliable webhost), I decided to purchase hosting with A Small Orange.

I used PayPal as my payment method. After registering, I eagerly awaited my welcome email. But instead, minutes later; I received an email from PayPal with the following subject :"Your payment has been refunded.". The email also contained a note from the seller: "Sorry, we don't host spammers".

At this point I was clearly confused. My site is a fairly popular technology enthusiast community, with microsoft releated news and has never had anything even remotely to do with spam.

I opened up a ticket with A Small Orange, saying the following:

Would you like to enlighten me as to why my money was just refunded with a note telling me that "We do not accept spammers".

Thanks

Minutes later the ticket was closed with no response. So, quite upset - I decided to give up.

What's worse is that PayPal charged me to reinsert the funds into my bank account. So in a sense, A Small Orange stole from me.

In short - DO NOT TRUST A SMALL ORANGE WEB HOSTING! They are clearly an extremely unprofessional company and are clearly not serious. There is no valid reason why they would refund me and not even explain themselves unless something is very wrong with the company.

After this, I checked around their forums and found nothing but complaints in the company forums, about bad speeds, unreliability , etc...

If you're thinking of choosing ASO, think again!

I hope I save a lot of people a lot of hassle with this post. :)

Strange that you would be pre-judged like that. It isn't particularly professional to decline an order with such a pitifully short explanation.

All web hosts have the right to refuse service at their own discretion, but it does seem rather like they have confused you with someone else. How they could judge you a spammer before having any dealings with you seems ilogical. The only posibility that comes up is that your domain is listed in one the Spam Black Lists and they perform a check on new domains before hosting them (I would say this is unlikely though.)

Finally if a company is going to decline your business, for whatever reason, they should refund any monies paid in full. I'm sure this was ASO's intention and they are clearly not be responsible for Pay Pals charging policies. Still my understanding is that Pay Pal charges are levied to the merchant not the Payee, I would therefore take this up with Pay Pal if you want the rest of your cash refunded. If that fails then take it up with your credit card company.

Still their refusal of your business seems completely ilogical.

Thats a strange story. I am sorry to hear about this, I only heard about a small orange recently. Perhaps this is just a glitch?

Thats an odd one, however maybe they thought your website was to much to host so they just canned you before you even signed up.

I am sorry to hear about that. Better luck in the future!

One of my current clients use to host with them, and thier site was very sluggish 90% of the time.

You would think they would simply tell you, "your site may use up to much of our resources sorry but we can not host your site" instead of wrongfully accusing someone of being a spammer.
