I've spent alot of time looking for a reliable hosting provider with good Anti-DDOS protection for hosting IRCD's and IRC shells.

I've had trouble with several providers so far and problems with thier networks not realy being up to the challenege even though they claim to be.

So far I've only found 3 providers capable of mittigating all DDOS atacks. Staminus, GigeServers, and JustEdge Networks.

So being that Just Edge is the most cost effective of the three choices I went with them. After about a month I began to notice something realy odd. It seemed that any one on windows attempting to download anything from the server off was only seeing partial bandwidth.

So i contacted support. The staff responded in a timely manner and we spent some time attempting to solve this issue which seemed at the time to be OS related. Finally after talking to the support staff we decided the best course of action was to wipe the machine and re-install the OS. Since the machine next to this one -on the same switch seemed to be acting fine we assumed that it had to be a server or OS dependant issue.

At this time Just Edge networks gave me 80 gigabyte of space on a seperate server on thier network for backing up all of my data free of charge. We then wiped the old server and reinstalled the Operating system. The issue presisted we tried switching over to a fresh new box. Finally Gregg the head Admin for Just Edge and I sat down and were able to diagnose the issue properly. It took about 10 days to get to this point primarily because Just Edge had to spend 5 days dealing with the unexpected loss of one of the Internet's Primary backbones. Apparently a major traffic accident resulted in the loss of several telephone poles that held MFN's primary fiber lines. The amount of chaos this would cause for any provider is understandable as is the time they spent dealing with it. Because of thier fault tollerant network only customers with dedicated MFN circuits saw an immediate loss in connectivity thanks to MPLS. Leaving them to merely have to reroute those clients to thier other providers instead of thier entire network. This is still a daunting task and requires alot off work and Just Edge solved this issue extremly quickly all the while because of their truly "Self Healing" network a majority of thier clients experienced littel to no down time.

Eventually after all of was solved we were able to set about properly diagnosing my issue. After several packet capture sessions we were able to determin that the issue was being caused by a bug in the BSD packet filter which was truncating packets. We spent about 12 hours sucessfully implimenting testing and optimizing a proper work around.

At this point in time I contacted thier sales divison to discuss a pro rated discount for the downtime related to this issue. Without hesitation thier billing department sent me a letter back saying I would recieve half off for that month's bill.

This is unheard of. Most hosting companies make you have to fight them and fill out large amounts of paper work before they even consider giving you any sort of discount. These guys just up and did it without arguing without question.

So It seems I have found myself a proper Dedicated server solution. If you plan on hosting any sort of IRC related or load balanced solution then these guys are the way to go. Also thier anti-ddos system is as good as Gigeservers (no one else even comes close and Gige's system is the best) and Just Edge's prices are at least 30% cheaper also Just Edge has no setup fee. GigE reams you on thier setup fees. So I personally would recomend these guys to any one looking for a stable, secure, and cost effective hosting solution with an excelent tech support staff.
