View Full Version : Shopping cart software recommendations?

I desperately need recommendations for shopping cart software (preferably written in PHP). I'm having trouble finding what I need and the amount of software available out there is quite overwhelming.
The most important thing to me is how shipping is handled. For each item I want to be able to set a base shipping price and an additional shipping price for at least 3 locations. If there are multiple items in the shopping cart it will charge the highest base price and then the additional prices for everything else.
I think Marketworks.com uses this system, but the carts are hosted on their server and they charge a monthly fee. Not only do I want to host the shop on my domain, but I'm far too small-time for a monthly fee.
I'd obviously prefer a free script, but I'm willing to pay a (reasonable) onetime fee if it's the only way to get what I want.
Other features I want:
- PayPal compatible
- Manufacturer descriptions
- Sort/search by manufacturer or category
- Coupon codes (unique codes for specific people as well as codes open to everyone)
- Wish list (which can be linked to, like what Amazon has)(Unless it can lead to fraud or something? Advice on this would be appreciated.)
- Compatible with iDevAffiliate or similar affiliate software (recommendations for these would also be nice)
And if you're curious to know what I'll be selling, it's just some small stuff I make (accessories, lip balm, etc). A couple of my friends also do crafty stuff so I want to be able to set them up too. We are all poor student types so it would be nice if we could sell our handmade goods without huge fees.
Thanks! I appreciate any help you can offer. :)

Have you looked at OSCommerce? It's a complete free e-commerce system, written in PHP that I think would do most, if not all of the features you request. It's also very extensible. They have a very large repository of user contributed extensions that can be added.

Zen Cart is based on osCommerce. Also, LiteCommerce (litecommerce.com) May be a possibility. I know a friend uses that for his site, and though you have to pay for it, it's cheaper than x-cart, on which it is based (made be the same guys in fact).
They might be worth checking out.

osCommerce.com is a great PHP shopping cart and it is open source. You can make most of the customizations that you mentioned, but you need to have a good knowlede of PHP and also know how to integrate contributed extentions.
oscommerce.com
I have a couple of friends that are using a PHP shopping cart called CashCow Cart and they have all of the customizations that you mentioned. One is selling Vises and he needs to control the shipping cost based on weight and destination. Evidently the CashCow Cart people make any customizations that you want and have free phone support, but they charge a fee to set everything up.

I would highly suggest OSCommerce.
I've set it up for a few customers now, with some search engine optimization tweaks, and they have had great results with it.

I would recommend you www.goldbar.net (http://www.goldbar.net/ua/link.php?affID=atiq_gb1) . They can manage your all tasks themselves. You wont have to fix any thing.

OSCommerce is pretty good:
http://www.oscommerce.com/
Zen Cart is a more loaded version, but somewhat more complex:
http://www.zen-cart.com/
A couple of places I've used for help with ecommerce questions include:
http://www.platinax.co.uk/forum/ecommerce/
http://www.thecommerceforum.com/
ADDED: The good thing about carts like OSCommerce and Zen Cart is the ability to modify them as required. Don;t think of them as "out the box" solutions, but a platform from which to build on.

I reccomend Zen-Cart though it seems complex initially, once you get used to the tools you realize that it is very powerful and secure

I highly recommend FastCommerce.com to anyone starting small business marketing.

Zencart is ok but if you want to go all out the OScommerce is the best. It has to be the biggest open source shopping cart out there, I use to use it for a site I managed (http://www.edguider.com) in the past and they were very happy with it. Your customers can buy anything online without problems because OS commerce is very straight forward...

Hi folks,
What do you think about booming technology Magento shopping cart?
I personally believe that Magento cart (http://www.semaphore-software.com/software-solution/magento-ecommerce-customization-design-development.htm) is the best choice for any serious webshop. If you put all selection criteria next to other shopping cart software, it will turn out that Magento is a fully-fledged eCommerce platform.

Through the various opinions provided here, it shows how software is eventually evolving and changing together through time just like the people’s needs.
