View Full Version : How to buy expired domain names

What's the best way to buy expired domain names? I've heard of going though Register.com could cost you $200! I think that's way too much for something that someone didn't want. Is there a cheaper means of giving an old unwanted domain name a happy home?

You mean fully expired and released names? I usually wander off to whois.net and run a couple of searches to see what pops up, then go to my usual registrar and pick them up for $10-15
Expired, but not yet dropped.. no idea. I'd be interested in a solution to that one myself :D

I think what I'm looking at is not yet dropped. I've come across a few which are held by register.com so I bet they will try to hold me to ransom. I'll let you know... :)

Hey, so did Tommy ever find anything regarding expired/dropping domain names? I was pretty interested to see if you did...

That's alright mate. Yeah, I did get it. Didn't I respond...
We enjoyed a few days there, and then went a bit further up the coast for a few more. Highly recommended.

Sorry to break up the chin wag guys, but just gonna update you with events.
I signed up with snapnames.com, a service that alerts you to any changes to a domain name record and lets you know if the name ever becomes available for re-sale or auction. No news from them yet.
Expirefish.com says it will register it for you the moment it becomes available.
I tried the Afternic.com Virtual Broker which made an unsolicited bid for me. The minimum bid is $200. After 5 days they will let you know if they didn't receive a reply from the owner.
And after just trying a search at deleteddomains.com and checking their definitions, it would appear that the domain is on hold. It's with Register.com so I'm gonna try to talk to someone there. It's been on hold since 08-03-01.
So, it's round the houses I go again, on my endless search to get hold of the said domain name. :)
Carry on guys....

Hey, Aussiehosts, are you a member of the plain ASCII text campaign ?
You don't use the graphical smileys, you haven't even highlighted or made the stuff in your sigfile clickable !
Its all just plain ASCII :)

I can provide some info on snapnames. A few months back, I found a domain I wanted that was showing on whois as just having expired, but not available from all the registrars I searched. I regiistered with snap names and paid the $45 to have them monitor and try to register. About a month later I started getting notifications about changes and in about a month and 1/2 I got the name.
I thought the $45 was well spent. I could have monitored the name daily and if no one got in ahead of me, possibly gotten it anyway for less, or more depending on registrar, but someone could have slipped in and gotten the name while I was sleeping as well. Snapnames also has a free service where the monitor and provide notifications, but given the status of my name, I thought it better to go ahead and pay the $45.
Of course if the registration is not even scheduled to expire for a couple of years (the $45 is for one year), or if the currrent owner never plans to let it expire, snapnames will not do much for you.
Hope this helps.

Starting Feb 2003, you can do it through your registrar. Click here for more info.

I'm sure that any registrar will charge through the nose for an expired domain name.
However,.... maybe if you could do a "whois" lookup on the domain and see what the admin email address is and if the domain hasn't been deleted yet, but is on hold because the registrant didn't pay the bill,... perhaps you could communicate with the registrant and get him/her to renew their domain (if they have the privilege to) and you give them double what they had to pay or something like that,..???
could be 1 way,.. I know I'd do it ;)
Good luck Mate

I like what you've done with cheapid.com - a lot better than some of the landing and for sale pages that I've seen at any rate. Is that your own coding, or a software package that's generally available?
Best wishes,
Simon.

Hello friends,
Here is a couple of tips before buy an expird domain, maybe can help
8 Tips Before Buy An Expired Domain
1- Check out the real backlinks, for example if you make in Google link:thedomain.com, maybe Google shoot 43434 backlinks, you say Great! But before say something... I high recommend visit some backlinks to check if the domain is. As you know Google doesn't update daily the backlinks. To make it easy open FireFox browser --> Edit --> See Source Code, then search the domain (in Firefox Ctrol+F), this process save time! If the domain name is not more in the backlink website, in the next Google PR update the domain will lose the power
2- Check out if the domain is in Yahoo, this can help a lot! If the domain is in Yahoo directory you are saving MONEY USD 300 / yearly
3- Check out if the domain is in Dmoz Directory, here you will save TIME!
4- Remember, the process to buy an expired domain can take time, maybe one month or more. This is time to build your next website with a good design. No More directories, LOL joke!!
5- Check out if the domain has gov, edu backlinks. Help a lot!
6- Before buy a domain, check out the history, I saw many good PR, but really I didnīt like the domain history, for example personal Gov domains, etc really we won’t to have problem in the future, right ? Use Internet Archive
7- If you find out a travel related domain, try to create a travel related site, as I can saw there are many people building websites with expired domain not related with the old content, for example, domains with name savemytree with new content with travel related. The best way for savemytree is create a website talking about trees, flowers, etc....
8- Keep working in your expired domain as a new domain.. Adding content, linkbuilding, etc etc , Check out a resource list to promote a website.
Bonus: If you find out an expired domain with traffic you can use it to redirect traffic to your new domain.
Best regards!
