View Full Version : Host to allow my own banner ads, or other profit?

Let's say I create a site that becomes very popular, but is free to use, and I pay for it out of my own pocket.

Is there a way I can use it to make a bit of money, at least enough to pay for the hosting of it? Banner ads for example? Would that constitute reselling? So I would need to find a host with reseller plans?

Or what about selling stuff from the site?

Selling products or services (advertising is IMO a service) isn't reselling.

"Reselling" as it is usually used means buying web space and selling it to someone else for their own use. Just like renting property then turning around and sub-renting it to someone else.

Hi rwhitlock,
With most paid hosts, you are able to do what you want as long as you stay within their terms. What you are asking is certainly acceptable.
This is an advantage of having a paid host :D
This doesnt really constitute reselling. Reselling is when you purchase the host plans at a discount and resell to your own clients.
However...having your own account on a paid host, you are able to sell products, etc. as well as running some type of banner ads for profit. Some hosts will even allow you to resell your own space.

Hope this helps clear up some confusion.

Assuming your not talking about reselling web space, one of the quickest ways to start making some money from your site is to set your self up as an affiliate

I suggest that you visit one of the main affiliate networks such as;

www.clickXchange.com
www.cj.com

These sites allow you to sell products on your site on behalf of their merchants. There are usually 3 types of program you can choose:

1. Pay per click - you run banners on your site and get paid everytime your visitors click on them

2. Pay per lead - you get paid everytime your site refers someone to a merchant site and they perform an action.

3. Pay per sale - I think you can guess this one :-)

Hope this helps,

At a guess I'm thinking you're refering to the area of most hosting companies AUP that restricts the reselling of your own account space - a pretty standard clause

All that ever means is, if you pay for hosting, only you are allowed to use it (or in some cases friends etc). What hosts won't let you do is resell that one account's space or services to other people for profit.

As far as banner ads and selling things from your website there wouldn't be many that would restrict that. After all online stores do both of those everyday.

FYI - Not all hosts have that clause.

That's true, but I'd hazard a guess it's a pretty general statement. Unless the host has a plan that allows you to buy a large amount of space and resell the space within as their reseller plan, cutting it up into smaller bits.

Speaking for us only...we do allow clients to resell their own space if they choose to do that.
All resources though are deducted from their main account, disk space, bandwidth, etc.
They can issue their clients space such as
maindomain/client.
