just read an interesting article in a magazine. It was talking about the recent deal between ICANN and Verisign.

It states that between now and 2007 every dotcom (.com) name registered, whether directly by VeriSign, or a competing registry will earn Verisign $6.

Now the sceptics among us might think that deal has something to do with the fact that ICANN is heavily subsidised by.........yep you guessed it Verisign ;)

IOW, ICANN is paying VeriSign $6 for every name registered?

I suppose you could argue that if VS is supporting ICANN then it's a repayment plan.

VS should not be getting paid...... what the internet needs is an open registry database, one that no corporation controls......

.

Every time a registrar takes an order for a .com registration, $6 of the fee they collect is going to VeriSign.

In effect all .com registrars are actually reselling on behalf of VS, whether they know it or not.

Just saw this on thestandard.com website:

"The U.S. government will need until May 14 to review a controversial deal extending computer security firm VeriSign's managerial responsibilities for running the .com domain system, according to do***ents released late Wednesday."

Maybe you'll get your wish JTY ;)

I believe that the $6 is to reimburse Verisign/Network Solutions for maintaining the shared registry, which is probably as open as it can get. I mean it has to be controlled and maintained somewhere, doesn't it? If every registrar had access to delete and edit the entire database, and there was no ultimate locus of responsibility and accountability ...

I'm no fan of Network Solutions, but I don't really begrudge them the $6 in this case. Maintaining the database seems to be one of the few things they're good at -- doesn't require any end-user support -- and $6 is almost reasonable, at least compared to their other prices.
