Don't know why, but I signed up with Rackshack yesterday -- got the $99 deal. Bad deal, I think. Should have my head examined. Their support is nil.
Am looking for some kind of tutorial on the net about running my own server -- apache, redhat, ensim -- any kind of "newbie gets dedicated server help" out there? I never thought I'd say this about myself, but I need something for "dummies."
Crash course needed!
Thanks.

Hey guys,
Thanks for answering me.
theCoolh, I would like to contact you -- will as soon as I get icq downloaded and installed. Thanks for the offer.
MizMartie, I have posted to their forums and participated in their chat. Finally started getting replies but not much help. The problem is I don't know a lot and don't know what to ask because I have always been on a virtual server. I have figured out a few things on my own. Found a place that explains DNS and Bind, for example, so I am not quite so ignorant as I was.
I'm sure the rackshack server will be fine as soon as I learn a few things! Feels wierd being so stupid after feeling kind of confident in the "virtual" web world for seven years!;)

its not that the server failed that pisses me off, its that they won't assist in recovering any data.

Wow I'm glad I didn;t go with rackshack. I had them in my final 3 when I decided to switch data farms.

They certainly seem to be going through some interesting times that's for sure. Sounds like they need to boost their support team quite a bit.
It's a bit of a warning on undercutting the market I think. You see it in virtual hosting all the time. Give away the farm, have a huge increase in customers, get flooded, then and up on everyones' sh*t list before you've made enough to cover your bills.
Hopefully they'll see the recent growth of contention as an opportunity to clean up their service a little.
Still as is often said, for the prices they offer you shouldn't expect too much - it's 1/4 the price we lease our servers at, with almost 10 times the data transfer added for free.

Hi Folks,
I've learned a lot since I first posted on this forum. My Rackshack server is doing fine now and I am a much more informed webber! An Ensim support person named Chris provided a lot of help when I posted on the Ensim forum. And, although it was not as much help as I needed, the Rackshack support group provided me with assistance. I can't say I really like the Ensim gui, though. I have seen others that are much more appealing. Maybe in the future I will learn more and like it better.
The Rackshack support forum has grown quite a bit now -- with how-to's and other helpful posts from more experienced members. I have been able to get very helpful information and assistance from other forum members.
My problem was that I had only worked from a virtual hosting situation -- never dedicated -- so I didn't really know what to expect, what to do, how to do it. I expected a lot more guidance and was frustrated when it wasn't available. Rackshack servers are not something I would recommend for anyone as "green" as I was (am!) -- However, if you have the time, the $$ and the patience, it will be a good learning experience in how to set up and run a webserver. I have been hosting sites on the web since 1995 and I have learned more in the past four months than all the other years combined!
My site on the Rackshack server is http://ateau.com if anyone wants to take a look and offer constructive critique. I am still setting it up, but I have signed up a few clients who are very happy with the service I have given them.
Cheers.
