Actually META tags are not only good for search engines, they also work with browsers.

In a simple way, METAs are elements used to provide information about a web page, like the language, description, character coding, etc.
Meta tags tell a search engine about your site and it's contents

Title (name of what you do or sell not always the name of your site or store)

Description ( a call to action words that make them want to click on your site. Plus what you do or sell)

example Free shipping on all featured knit tops

many colors to choose from. Lowest prices on all designer clothes and hand bags mens and kids section too!.

Keywords (keywords are the main topic of your site or what your sell. these are the words a search engine wiil look at on your site. When a customer types in a word or a few words into their seach box to find what they are looking for. A search engine will take the information it has from every indexed site and return the most relevent site with the highest page rankings for the words typed. example knit tops was the search term the customer typed in. the highest page ranked site for this key word might be wal-mart or k-mart jc penny) you should get the idea.

Robot tags (this tells the search engine how often to come back a look at your site. usually 14 or 15 days. 1 day for a blog) this does not nessarily bring them back but sometimes it does help.)

Author tags ( this is you or your name. sometimes the name of your site)

As was stated eariler in another post these tags are not used as much as they use to be by google

however they are still used by yahoo and many other search engines. it is still a good idea to place them on your site.

Where to place them

You place a meta html code between the head or header section of your site before the body section.

Here is an example

<head>

<title>Your title or site name here</title>

<meta name="description" content="Free shipping on featured knit tops many colors to choose from. Lowest prices on all designer clothes and hand bags.">

<meta name="keywords" content="designer clothing,hand bags,knit tops, pants, blouses,

kids clothes,mens wear,dresses,shorts,,shoes">

<meta name="author" content="Your name">

<head></a> (This is fake site or mock up code.)

some afilliate pages do not allow the insertion of meta tags.

some editors have meta tags turned off and you need to turn them on before placing them.

some editors need you to break up the code and place keywords and the description into two diffrent places.

sorry this got so long and I hope I have explained everything so that it easy for you to understand.

many sites have a free meta tag generator.

just type it into your search box. google it.

Once their add you information into the boxes provided. Copy the html code then paste it on to your site in the head section.

Hope this help any and everyone who needs info

about meta tags.

Pretty good info here. I have seen the term meta tags around but did not know what they were good for. I will definely keep that in mind when editing my blog and building my website.
