I am planning to discontinue my account with a web hosting company. What happens to my domain name once the account is closed? Will I be able to access it later when I decide what I want to do with it and where I want to host it? What "address" do I use when I finally get around to the transfer?

Thanks for your help!

Do you own the domain name or does the hosting company?

Who is listed as the ADMIN contact for the domain?

As far as the IP address of your domain goes, you'll get a new one with your new hosting company. If they manage your nameservers you'll get new nameservers as well.

Make sure you keep your domain registration current while you are between hosts.

I purchased the domain name through Network Solutions for two years, so I am the owner, not Internetgrapevine.net. Do I need to get a web host to "park" this domain name until I get another website created?

Thanks a lot!

No, you don't need to park the domain. You don't have to do anything with it until you are ready - other than don't let it expire :).

There are tens, if not hundreds of thousands of domain names out there that don't go anywhere at all :).

Just think of your domain name as your letterbox and your hosting account as your home. In this case when you leave that home for another one, you take your letterbox with you, and stick it in the ground out front of your new home when you decide you're somewhere you like.

In effect as long as you own the domain, it's your address no matter where you go. Until you get a new account it'll just point into dead air for a while.
