hello folks,
i'm a newbie here and i have a quick question about domain names.
every place i go talks about "registering" the domain name, in that you have to keep paying a yearly fee till armagedon.
is there any way to buy a domain name out-right?
many thanks

Hi pluto!
Welcome to the forums.
To answer your question, YES, you can buy a domain name, BUT you still need to register that domain name?
I will try to simplify.
You can purchase a domain name, from individuals, etc., but that domain name will be registered through the use of a domain registrar. Registrars are now able to register domains from 1-10 years. For instance http://www.000domains.com
registers domains for 13.50 per year.
The resgistrar holds the domain name information, such as owner of domain, registratnt, and other pertinent information regarding the name.
Does this help enlighten you?

well kinda...
you seem to be asking if you can buy a domain name like you buy a house. The answer there is no. You can lease a domain name for what amounts to forever buy just re-registering it before it runs out over and over.
I agree though, it would be nice to actually *own* a domain name. The system just runs so if no-one puts their hand up to register when the time runs out it goes back into the pool (after a fashion)
