What is the average processing time it takes from the time you select a domain name and click the "Register" button at the registrar's site to the time that it's confirmed to be yours?

I don't know why...the registrar I'm using now takes a few hours to register a .NET or .ORG domain name, but .COMs seem to take forever to get registered

Depends on how they have their system set up. If they wait to confirm your details at least that long. From when I poke 'register' to when I get the e-mail in my inbox telling me I have the domain through Dotster, is usually about 10 minutes or so. That's inclusive of the speed of e-mail, as well as the time it takes me to check my e-mail (which incidently is set to check every ten minutes) :)

As domains are registered at a blistering rate, it's something that has to be done pretty quick. The one you're using seems a little slow to me.

The name might be registered quickly. But it takes time (typically 24-48 hrs) for the name to propagate throught the net.

The domain name does appear on the list of domains that previously I've registered, yes. Problem is, the domain control panel which is supposed to open when I click on it gives me a "This domain is still in the registration process" reply, and it's been more than a day. I checked the domain name availability at NetSol and it's still available.

When I register .NET or .ORG domains I can get into the domain control panel within 2-3 hours on average (although it takes another 24 hours for the control panel to be FUNCTIONAL), but I don't know why .COM domains NEVER work at all.

I had a previous problem with another .COM domain name which I tried to get through this registrar. It ended up getting registered by someone else, and according to the whois I did through OpenSRS, this person registered the domain a day after me (and he registered it through NetSol) :shake:

Oh yeah, in case anyone was wondering, this registrar is ukreg.com, which is run by FASTHOSTS

Hmm.. well at a guess I would say I was right. They *seem* to be making sure your CC details are accurate before they process the domain. This is all fine and good for hosting and no-one's going to 'nab' your space while it's checked, but domains are a little different. Domain registrars are supposed to do a quite real time check (usual AVS system), then do the detailed one later. You should get your domain registered instantly.

I'd just use a different registrar. These guys just aren't up to it by the sounds of it.

.. at least that's my view on it anyway :)

If anyone is interested...

I dusted off the ol' credit card and registered the same domain name through Dotster. 15 minutes after it was done, I could access the domain name with Dotster's Account Manager. NetSol and Register.com also indicated that the domain is no longer available, although OpenSRS still says that it is...

Meanwhile...at ukreg.com, it still says "This domain is still in the registration proocess". Hmm...ukreg.com is an OpenSRS RSP...wonder if there's a connection...

Anyway, the only reason why I used ukreg.com for my last 5 domains was because I can use my debit card there (I'm living in the UK until mid-June). Looks like I've got another story about British Efficiency to tell the folks back home...

OpenSRS might be having problems, but I doubt it.... It could just be the registrar being overly lazy....

I wrote in to OpenSRS Compliance about the matter, and yesterday I received an e-mail from ukreg (which was also cc to the OpenSRS compliance officer handling the case).

Guess what...apparently they do not think that they have a problem. The bloke had the cheek to tell me that "anyway you did not lose the domain name since it was registered by yourself through dotster.com, and we have already refunded you".

What's even better is that the guy also claimed that they over-refunded me but did not pursue the matter (the truth being that the "over-refund" was for another failed registration which took god-knows-how-long), and that he feels their company has been (get this) more than generous in the handling of my case.

I'm now searching for another OpenSRS reseller to transfer my domains to...preferably one that has a domain credit system and accepts payment for credits by cheque.

Suggestions are appreciated :)
