Hi,
The web metrics industry is about gathering information that can support business decisions. It's about using analytics tools to work out the return on investment of a particular pay-per-click campaign, or working out where the most profitable visitors can be found. It's about understanding how the website is used and what might be stopping people from buying.

Web analytics is the measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of internet data for purposes of understanding and optimizing web usage. Off-site web analytics refers to web measurement and analysis irrespective of whether you own or maintain a website. It includes the measurement of a website's potential audience (opportunity), share of voice (visibility), and buzz (comments) that is happening on the Internet as a whole.

Thank you for your responses! Is there any web analytics software that you would recommend? I've been told to steer clear of Google analytics as a lot of people I know say it isn't very accurate. Shocked by that as Google are a massive company. Your suggestions would be greatly received!

Most people don't even analyze their websites, nor even know what Google analytics is. For a successful website, you need to analyze and read all the information possible for your incoming traffic sources, keywords used, where they exit your site, etc.
There is always room for improvement, and Google analytics will tell you exactly what to do if you take the time to read it.

Be cautious of link building or hiring someone that is not sure of what they're doing. I had a client come to me once, ironic enough from the UK, that their rankings had dropped in Google UK and increased in Google Russia....the reason after doing some digging was that they had hired an SEO company from Russia to do link building and these guys did link building all from Russian sites.

With web analytics, you would know how long your visitor stayed in your website, who they are and where they came from. You will be able to know their clickstreams, the keywords they used, and how they came to be in your website (referrer pages, search engines, etc). You would be able to determine how many times a user or a visitor returned to your website and which pages were given preference.
In fact, a web analytics tool would tell you your website usage down to the last specifics. It would tell you about your visitor's nationality and language. It can even pinpoint the city of origin. Of course, it will tell you the IP addresses and the host used for access. Further analysis would reveal if your visitors were there to actually check out your site or if they were mere strays. Most certainly, you will know how many visitors you get daily.
