ok, i'm looking for a CHEAP website host that offers 100MB of space, preferably 200MB. The cheapest i've found as far as repected website hosting companies is $10/month for 100MB of space. I actually went to one2host.com and they have 100MB of space for only $3.99/month which is absolutely wonderful. But i've heard that they have a lot of angry customers and poor tech support. Does anyone know anything about that company or of any other good and cheap companies where i can get what i need? :shake:

You might try doing an advanced search here in the directory.
Type in your 100mbs with a price limit and see what returns, THEN it might be helpful to come back here and post questions, etc.
Im not sure what kind of quality you are going to receive for 3 bucks a month, for 100megs!
Thats usually WHY places like that have NO support or very little.
In the end...you always get what ya pay for

Hello guitar_thief,
In my opinion, there are lots of companies that have plans under $10.00 for 100MB.
The following are recommended ones:
www.hostignition.com
www.addr.com
www.hostway.com
Check them out.
Hope this helps.

What do u expect for cheap hosting?
While companies are barely making any money with such cheap hosting, how can they afford high paid tech people.......
so the answer is "sometimes cheap means bad service, bad equipment, bad hosting"

Agreed. One way or another they have to be in the black. So they either cut corners with the hardware or support, or they have another line of business which subsidses the hosting part which means hosting isn't thier main focus.
I agree that when a host gets to a certain size economies of sale can help them to lower prices. But most hosts never get to be that big ( :( ). $10-$15 even $20/mo isn't bad if you're getting good service. And most hosts offer additional discounts for annual plans too.

Indeed correct. So 100 megabytes for $3.99, what can one get.
So lets add up all the things hosts can cut corners on.
1. Limit bandwidth big time. By the time I finish washing my car, my website appears on my browser or times out.
2. To make the profit on $3.95 hosting, host would seriously need a used computer with junk parts, lets say an old computer which is on its last breath with a residual value of $150 dollars. Now we need over 150 and more greedy idiots to signup and tada!
what a deal! Then the hosting company would be making money covering the cost of grandpa's computer and bandwidth.
3. Cut down on technical support - A technical support rep makes an average of $15-$35 dollars/hour. Why would a company want a Tech support to spend an hour with a $3.95/mth client. So cut cut cut. I can actually see the hosting company asking the security guard to help out with Technical support.
So there we go, thats what you get for $3.95 a month.
So the lesson is.....one can be pretty stupid to be angry at a $3.95 web host when one should be angry at him/herself in the beginning for making such a dumb decision.

I think a lot of it is a perception problem from both sides of the $ sign.
It's the job of the customer to get the best deal they can. You do it with stereos, you do it with TV's. Hosting isn't that much different in that respect. However, people know buying a Sony is going to give them a better product than Brand-X. Hosting is a different kettle of fish as some of the biggest names are also some of the biggest dogs in the industry.
Hosting isn't a product - it's a service. It's the quality of that service that you're paying for - not the bandwidth - not the disk space. (though they do play a factor). Host-X who's giving the world for next to nothing is going to have to crunch the numbers somehow. It's a common statement amongst hosts that bandwidth is the biggest expense. I tend to disagree beyond the material costs of running a hosting business. I think support is (and should be) the biggest expense. To prove that statement, try getting that $3.95 a month host to spend some serious time on your account sorting out a big issue, and keeping you posted as things come to light. I think you'll find cookie cutter responses to repeated requests for help..
Support is something no-one ever really thinks about until their site comes tumbling down around their ears. You'll be happy to have a webhost that's looking out for *your* best interests then - even if it does costs a few extra bucks a month.
