Yesterday my hard drive crashed. I had some backups on few cds but those were more than 8 month's old! I lost all my important official documents, programs, emails etc. I tried to recover the data from this dead hard drive but no success. My friend suggested me to go for online backup here onwards. Can anyone suggest cost effective and reliable online backup service? I am looking for a tried and tested service.

Do the google search for the backup services. I suppose you will find a lot of the companies to chose from as there is own competition there

Sorry to hear about your mishap. Personally, I use an external drive to store backups. Taking a backup is faster, retrieving data is faster, and I know who has access to that data. Home Internet connections are typically slow when it comes to uploading, even when you have broadband.
I'm sure many use online backups and are happy. Aside from speed issues, I feel more secure knowing who can access my data - nobody. :) Just my two cents worth.

I have just switched to BackupandShare.com for my online backup need. And must say it is a great service for personal use or people looking for inexpensive online backup. It is very simple to use with features like incremental automatic and scheduled backup. With BackupandShare.com, windows mobile backup solution is available free, so now my mobile data is also backed up.Their customer support was very friendly and helpful. When my computer crashed, they answered all my questions and even walked me through the entire recovery process to make my data online on a new PC. With such great features and value for money, I must admit I made a right decision.

That is not surprise I suppose. Most of web hosting companies offers that as the marketing tag. I sppose each particular customer understand what he is paying for.

IMO an on-line backup takes a tremendous amount of time for any substantial amount of data.
Local backups are an order of magnitude faster than an online backup.
Have you thought about a simple backup script (a few copy commands) that can be put in a recurring job schedule?
A search for "online backup service reviews" will return several links to service evaluation reports.
