How have you all been? Great I hope :)

I've been sooo busy with life in general, that I have not been to this board in months. Anyway, now I have a Web design question 4u, and I'm hoping someone can help me out.

I am designing a gift site for a new client, and I wanted to use a drop down menu for her products link. Can anyone suggest a good online tutrial for this? I don't have Fireworks, so that's not an option (unless I download a trial version). I do have a book on dhtml, but it looks kind of complex to me. Then again, if I have to figure it out to get this to work - there's no time like now! :D

Here is a link to a site that uses a drop down menu exactly like I want to use (www.favors.com). I know they make use of Java script for this, but that's about all I know. I looked on Webmonkey, but didn't see much help on this topic.

Can anyone here help me out? Or tell me a good place to look??

Thanks a lot, and btw, I have my biz Web site just launched, although it's only about 70% done. I need to get my pricing and portfolio up within the next couple of weeks: www.amandamarks.com

Hi Amanda,

It's great to hear from you again. We are all well here at webhostdir and it's good to see that your going from strength to strength with the web projects.

Here is a link to a good tutorial for the drop down menus:
http://www.computerarts.co.uk/web/dhtml/dropdowns1.asp

another is opencube.com and they allow you download a whole set of examples in a zip file. Only issue is you will need to rebuild the directory structure and put all the files back in the right places. If you can figure it out it's an ok little bundles of samples. Needs licensing at some point though.

Alternatively type 'dhtml menu tutorial' or variations similar into your favorite search engines to find more samples.

www.amandamarks.com is looking good too :good:

I never imagined that drop downs would be so complex! Oh well, think how good I'll feel when I finally figure it out :D

I'll be back again later - have the board marked in my favorites again (new computer), so I'll drop by more often :)

They are a bit tricky but like you've pointed out there are packages that will help you with them but you will need to download trial versions unless you want to open up the wallet and invest a good few dollars.

Good to hear we've made it back into your must visit sites again. There are a few new faces around and some people you should remember too.

...this is always a popular and busy place :)

I've downloaded a zip file from dhtmlcentral.com. Trouble is, I'm fairly new to scripting in general, so looking at those files is a little overwhelming up front

I'll let you know when it's working ;)

Amanda,

It's been a few days...how's the menu going? Any joy yet?

...I haven't even started to figure it out yet. I do have all the files, and a site that I can go by (thanks to a biz associate) with a working drop down menu. Hopefully, I'll be starting to take a look some time tomorrw, and figure out things for myself.

That's the trouble when you start a biz - where do you get the time to do everything?? I have about six ongoing clients right now - nothing great, but all the jobs are fairly big and/or ongoing ones.

I'll have to figure out a better system, because I haven't even done a lot of marketing yet, so things are bound to get busier - exactly the way I want it.

Btw, I am using hostsave.com for my amandamarks.com Web site. Anyone here use them? I've recently come across some not so great reviews on them, and my amandamarks email is causing me great frustration :(

I'll be back with an update on the drop downs within a few days :)

Here's 2 sites that will provide easy drop down menus.

As simple as cut and paste

1) provides a drop down menu bar... on the top of your web page
with auto menu drop.... You'll see a sample in the link below.

http://javascript.internet.com/navigation/x_menu-bar.html

2) create Javascript drop-down/pull-down menus. Works in MSIE, and Netscape. Simple programming already set up... just fill in the blanks and paste codes within your site.
