depending on the way you look at it, it's often an interchangable term.

To transfer your domain from one webhost to another, yes, it's just changing the DNS (nameservers) from the old host to the new host.

To transfer your domain from one domain registrar to another is a different kettle of fish, and is an actual 'transfer'.

So in short, if you're just moving hosts and not the place your domain was registered at then no, you don't need to transfer your domain anywhere - merely point it to the account your website is at.

If you are hosted by company "a" and want to be hosted by company "b"

Company "b" will ask you that you transfer your actual site to them - is this not the case ?

and this is an actual transfer.

The thing is, many not nice ISPs put a hold on your domain-name so that it can't be moved.

To me that should be illegal, but it seems to be happening.

Do a search for my other thread, and you'll see.

Aloha~

You can have your site hosted anywhere, and have the domain registered anywhere. The domain does not have to be registered with the host. Only the name server information needs to be changed if you change hosts.

Yes, I have heard of some hosts who hold a domain hostage and that is just wrong!

But I have also heard of clients who signup with a host during a free domain promotion, and then they move to another host immediately. Then the first host is out the domain registration cost and that isn't fair either.

When a host offers a promotion or a free domain registration offer, then they should take the time to set up guidelines stating that the domain must be held with them for a set limit of time before being transfered to another domain hosting company. For example, I signed up for my own domain at a half price discount and in order to continue managing this domain I must first stay with this company for three consecutive months.

This where the interchangability of terms comes in I suppose. When you get an account with a new webhost the first thing you do is upload your website to their server. It's not transferred as such as the old site is still with the old host - the new one is merely a copy of that original site, which is then deleted when you close the account with your original host. The domain name itself is what now points to your new home. Nothing is really 'moved' at all, just the direction things are pointed at.

The term 'transfer' is something that works for people, hence it's use. I personally use it myself when speaking with people, even though it may not be totally correct :)
