I would like to try to build a simple forum for my Extreme Snowmobile site www.Smokeyboys.com using dreamweaver mx or any other program anyone can suggest. I am using coldfusion mx for a application server tech.

Why not have look at out sourcing your forums? There are lots of web sites offering forums that you can customise to suite your needs. You can link to them from your site and they look like its part of your site. You could also buy or get hold of the code for forum software. These forums for example use VBulletin. There are lots of free and paid for forum software out there.

If your asking where to start on writing forum software I think you should look at outsourcing it. If however you do decide to write your own and you have a more specific question then post it.

A lot of sites install forum software. There are many free options out there for you but for a start you could take a look at

http://3od.com/phpBB2/index.php
and

Invision Board has been getting a lot of praise lately too. If you're hooked on creating your own from scratch, downloading a few free forums and having a read through their source code would be a good way to get a feel for how others are doing it

phpBB is another great board, and is what I personally use. Worth a look at if you would like an easy to setup forum :)

yes i agree, phpBB is the way to go until you get big, then get vbulletin, cause it costs a bundle.

I agree phpBB (http://www.phpbb.com/) solves it for you.

But you can try experimenting with phpnuke (http://www.phpnuke.org/) too for more control and for content management.

I've 3 suggestions:

1) free and easy phpbb I already saw it suggested.
2) look at the bottom of just about any forum you go to. It will have a link to the author's web site.
3) Download just about any forum and hack them up. As long as you leave copyrights intact you aren't doing anything wrong.

No, you need the scripts in the back for posting/replying, etc.

We've used www.phpbb.com for a lot of our clients...it's free, setup is quick, and is fully customizeable.

I have used vBulliten and PhpBB, and if you dont need anything too complex, the free phpbb should do it for ya.
