OK, so what is a Content Management System? What are the benefits? And is it expensive? Do CMSs produce standards-compliant pages? Or accessible ones? And can anyone in my company use it?

Cheers in advance! :good:

A good CMS allows you to manage huge amounts of data across your sites from central online access point. Typically we'll use joomla or drupal for quite content heavy sites or wordpress for something a little easier. It all depends on your needs.

If you're going for something that need customisation then you may want to speak with proper developers who can take most open source platforms and chop and change whatever you want.

Another good cms is websitebaker. It doesn't have the fancy graphics like joomla or drupal but it's a lot easier to setup and to use.

A content management system (CMS) is the collection of procedures used to manage work flow in a collaborative environment. These procedures can be manual or computer-based. The procedures are designed to do the following:

Allow for a large number of people to contribute to and share stored data
Control access to data, based on user roles (defining which information users or user groups can view, edit, publish, etc.)
Aid in easy storage and retrieval of data
Reduce repetitive duplicate input
Improve the ease of report writing
Improve communication between users

In a CMS, data can be defined as nearly anything: documents, movies, pictures, phone numbers, scientific data, and so forth. CMSs are frequently used for storing, controlling, revising, semantically enriching, and publishing documentation. Serving as a central repository, the CMS increases the version level of new updates to an already existing file. Version control is one of the primary advantages of a CMS.

The are quite a few good free CMS systems out there already. WordPress being one of the larger ones, Joomala, DotNetNuke just to name a few. Most of them have pretty quality support and plenty forum and tutorial sites. Pretty much just need to figure which one will suit your companies needs.
