I am planning to get a reseller account but have no idea on how to get my own nameserver. If I already have a domain name registered, how do I make this as a nameserver?

Thanks.

Hi markus,
Welcome to the forums! :)
You will need to check with your host on this.
They usually assign 2 ip's, and you will then go to the "registrar" where your domain is registered, and look for info on
"register name servers, or create name servers"
You then enter the ips for said domain. Your registrar should have some info on their site about registering nameservers.

you're going to have to register those nameservers with the registrar that has the domain you're adding the nameservers to, or else they won't let you add it.

https://www.netsol.com/cgi-bin/makechanges/itts/host/ (for networksolutions, for example)

The following are the steps you need to take to start using those nameservers with your main domain and all your clients' accounts:

1-Register your reseller nameservers at your domain registrar.

2-Modify your domain's nameservers

3-Modify your client's nameservers

--------------
1- Go to your registrar and look for "register nameservers" page. Follow the instructions. If registering fails with error "could not verify IP addresses" or similar, try again the next day. Also note that registering nameservers doesn't mean registering a new domain, you are basically just letting the DNS databases know that there are some services with individual names connected to your domain name. (Registering nameservers will not cost you anything).

2-In order to transfer your domain onto the new servers, you will need to change your domain name's nameservers with the nameservers you've created in the step above.

Set it to use your reseller nameservers (ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com). These are the nameservers that will be listed when people are doing a Whois on your domain "yourdomain.com".

3-In order to transfer your client's domains onto the new servers, the same step as above will need to be done with both new and existing clients.

If you handle the domain for your client, go to the registrar and set your client's domain to use ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com. If not, send email to the client telling them to make the changes at their registrar (this is usually included in the welcome email you send them as the reseller).

Apologies I've only skimmed this thread so this might have being answered already!

If your wanting to register your own nameservers because your host doesn't handle all of this for you as part of a private lable reseller plan, then this means you are going to piggy back their nameservers by registering 2 nameservers under your domain.

ns1.yourname.com
ns2.yourname.com

with the IP addresses of your hosts nameservers...

This is great until your host decides they need to change the IP addresses of their name servers. Unless they tell you (and give you 48 hours notice) all sites that use your nameservers will stop working!!!

how would the person you create a hosting account for, 'point' their domain name to your nameservers?

sorry i'm a newbie

They simply change their nameserver settings at their registrar so they reflect your nameservers

ie:
ns1.yourdomain.com
ns2.yourdomain.com

If you or your customer does not know how to do this most registrars will make the change for you if you provide them with the ns1 and ns2 nameserver information.

To make your domain a name server you need to contact your registrar.

Ok, i can't afford to pay some web host company to store my webpages for me. I do have a domain name i purchased. Now i'm trying to setup my dns so that it points to my apache server i installed on my computer. Right now, this is the link that i use to connect to my webpages http://65.92.68.92/

But, i want to use my domain name i purchased instead, which is anmna.com

So how do i do this? i went to my domain settings and tried to enter http://65.92.68.92/ into my DNS primary server, but it won't accept it. So how do i get my domain name to point to my computer that has apache server installed? or is it possible? anyone? please.. i'm broke.. help ?

Or, how to i register http://65.92.68.92/ as my nameserver?

Unless you are anticipate being permanently connected to the net 24/7 and running an authoritative nameserver through Bind, then ideally, you need someone to configure and maintain some,
or all, of your DNS records.

If you want further help, feel free to drop me an email..
