I am looking to setup my own nameserver on my dedicated host. I want to use my domain (ie: ns.mydomain.com ns2.mydomain.com). Is there software I must install on my server, or scripts, or anything to accomplish this.
Also, where do I register my nameserver? I noticed another thread mentioned going to your registrar and having them register your nameserver, but where can I go to put my nameserver in a database so it is accepted by other registrars when my clients want to use it as their domains nameserver?
Any help is greatly appreciated,

all you need is dns server installed. what OS are you running?
there are really only a few major registrar databases, if you register your ns on networksolutions, and another one that's attatched to the PIR (Public Interest Registry) you should be fine.
although verisign's db might propogate over to the PIR, i'm not absolutely sure

DO NOT USE NETWORKSOLUTIONS! (http://www.freeforums.com/showthread.php?threadid=6266)
How do i set them up?
Install Linux
Where do i get DNS server software?
Its already implemented into linux, check out webmin.com
for a GUI, it configures all your services running on your server
Where do i register NS?
Go to DOMAIN-DISCOUNT.BIZ,
Login using your username and password
Click on the domain name
Click 'Domain Host Information'
Enter anything other than www in front of the domain name
Enter the IP address
Save changes
You will now be able to set up these name servers on the domain name. Once this has occurred, please keep in mind that this information will require 48 hours to propagate.
this should apply to godaddy.com, too

you may want to become a reseller first and then rent your own dedicated server .
i know interland.com has good deals on pricing for resellers and hosting owners.
you may want to try the section:
Hosting & Domain Offers
of this forum.
don't worry about the dns software, it's usually pre-built./installed for you and it comes on plain linux software i think the latest is ver. 9.

Would I be able to use SimpleDNS as a nameserver?
Thanks

My suggestion would be to become a reseller and use the DNS provided by Cpanel or one of the other control panels...
It should be easy enough to setup the name servers in your registrar but without reliable DNS, your name servers wont be worth much. Dont leave your reliabilty to Comcast through there cable modem service!
My suggestion is if your going to do anything.. Do it right! A reseller account wont cost you much and I'm almost positive that if you try to run anything commercially through Comcast, you will be breaking there TOS or AUP. They will probably shut it down fast. They probably have things in place to ensure they block DNS and other commercial ran products out of a residential service.
