Just wondering ... is "How to be an Obnoxious Jerk" a required course in law school?

We run a directory -- a la Yahoo -- on a specific topic. Folks submit links, we verify that they're accurate, and include them in the directory.

Today, out of the blue, we receive an e-mail from some jerk claiming to work in the legal department of some company in Las Vegas:

We understand that you may have only been linking to the offending site, but nevertheless immediate removal of the link(s) is required to avoid any further legal action.

Please remove any and all occurances (sic) of the word ****** from your web content at once. Then reply with your URL so we can remove you from the list of offenders.

The moron doesn't even bother to point us to the offending page -- guess he expects us to drop everything and wade through 6,000 pages looking for it -- all based on an unsupported allegation from an unverified source.

My response began, "Given the fact that we have no idea who you are or what you're talking about, we take strong exception to your characterization of us as "offenders" of any sort,
and to your threats of "further legal action". The fact that you work in a legal department, if indeed you do, does not excuse you from the social expectations of civility and common courtesy."

... and ended, " If you want us to take any action outside of our normal procedures, you may forward the information required by our policy and the URL(s) of the affected web page(s) along with a polite request -- if you need to enlist the assistance of a non-lawyer to help you with the "polite" part, please do so -- to ..."

And lawyers wonder why "normal" people think they're all scum.

Hehehehe....if you look past being a jerk it's funny.

I wish I had a $1 for every wacko email I got. I should save them for a book some day. :)

We will be more than happy to edit pages on our site to meet your specifications, at our going rate of $250 per hour, 4 hour minimum. For a sample contract, please go to the URL http://biteme.com/youjerk.html.

I actually sent one of these out in response to a similar request from someone claiming to be a legal representative of a large outdoor supplier. Never did hear back from them.

Hahaha ... I think I like yours better ... maybe I could offer that as an alternative to sending us some actual proof.

I'm not even sure that placing a link to someones site can be regarded as an offence. most of the major search engines are probably breaking the law in a huge way if this is the case. Have you ever been asked to verify you identify when submitting a URL to a search engine?

One time I did put a link to a site on my site in hopes of getting a return link.

The other site owner, after several attempts to contact him, asked that I take the link off my site (and didn't even address the link exchange I had asked for). I did what he asked. No big deal, the guy was an arogant a**hole anyway and his site has since died due to his own arogance.

I cant understand why anyone would want someone to stop sending them traffic. It doesnt make sense. Unless theyre using their site name to endorse a product I dont see what the big deal is.

Arrr its good to get back on the forums, I've been suffering withdrawl symptoms ;)

In my example the owner was a major arogant ****!!! He thought he was a marketing genius, he felt he could do no wrong, started believing his own promotional hype, and didn't care who he PO'd. That dug his own grave. He ultimately PO'd the wrong people, they went out started thier own site and in less than a year drew away all the business from him (without the arogance and BS).

There's some more interesting stuff in the details but that's the summary of it. An excellent case study in the rise and fall of a web site business!
