Hello, my site is currently using virtualis, it is expensive, friends in California tell me my site takes 10 minutes to load (from a T1). they apparently have just been bought by something called asgrafix. Since then, when I try to view my page, it takes a long time. Interland keps sending me stuff. Where should I go for hosting?
Site Needs:
It is a Flash cartoon site (2-5 gigs of transfer a month currently)
I designed the site in Dreamweaver using simple HTML. I have one perl/cgi script, but that is all. I don't think I need more than 100-150 megs of storage. I would like the site to load quickly all over the world, and be up 24 hours a day.
In July, my cartoons and website address will be on prime time British tv, so my transfer rate will spike.
Is there a significant difference between Virtual Hosting and Shared Hosting?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I forgot to mention that interland wants a 12 month contract. that seems like too much of a commitment for me..

Hi Cinelook,
Virtual hosting is shared hosting....you may be thinking of your own dedicated server?
Usually HIGH-traffic sites, or sites that the user wishes to run their own customized software and applications rather than the standard ones supplied by the hosting co. then you may want to look into your "own dedicated server"
You mention Interland? They are known for spamming, and they do not come recommended. Only a sample, but several testimonials

Your needs arent really anything that will be hard to find. You can even search by requirement at the link provided when entering this general forum. Maybe this can help you to narrow some choices down!

Thanks! That helped a lot. I am not going with Interland now. The reason I asked about shared/virtual hosting is because the Interland sales rep I talked to today explained how Virtualis was "bad" because they use "Virtual" hosting, and Interland is "good" because they use "Shared" hosting.
I found out today that I can get free hosting due to the fact that I am now in the UGO (UGU.com) network (because they just bought the bla-bla.com network). I am probably going to do this. Does anyone have any experience with UGO?

so...the rep tried to convince you that Interland is better because they market the same service under a different name?

I have visited detonate.net often over the past year and I think they have moved off UGO now, but I never had any problems with performance when browsing or downloading there.

yes, it appears the Interland guy was trying to trick me...
He went on and on about how terrible "virtual" hosting is, and how great Interland is...

hehe,
to be fair, I think half of those sales guys haven't really got much of a clue of how it all works. They just get hired to be all excited and convince people to buy things they don't really need - be it vacuum cleaners or webhosting.
2-5 gig and 100-150 meg isn't much for a site, so whether you go for free hosting or paid there should be plenty of options open to you. perl and .swf will sit on almost anything these days so that shouldn't be much of an issue either. Your only concern might be that upcoming spike. Most hosts will be able to handle it (though some may charge you for the bandwidth if you do blow a months worth all at once), but it may pay to let them know it's coming in case they go and over react if your usage suddenly goes through the roof.

It may be that your host's bandwidth suffers at peak times, but I just downloaded a copy of one of the enjoyably sick and twisted movies (something wrong with Skeletor working at a TCBY) in just a few seconds, and no issues when viewing either...

I just wanted to thank everyone for all the help. Also, I have discovered the reason why my page was loading so poorly for me recently. My ads were being called from the bla-bla.com server (which no longer exists). That was slowing my site down.
Virtualis actually had very good tech support (someone would answer the phone, even late at night). Unfortunately, they have been bought out...
I am now going with the free hosting at UGO.com. They have 100gigs of free transfer a month. That is a LOT (compared to the other offers I have seen). The only bad part is, that Hardocp.com is leaving the UGO hosting service, but staying in the UGO network. (hardocp is a very popular comp/tech site). I hope this free hosting service hasn't gone to all hell...
I guess I'll have to see and report back. Thanks again everyone!

this place has no monthly fees. I have been using it for several months now and am very happy. there is a one time fee of $200 and you get 200MB and 5GB bw/month.
