I am wanting to now if i get my own dedicated server and only have 128 ram how many people can i host? Also, what about 256, 512, 1024 ect..
Also, if you are wanting to start doing your own hosting off your own T1, t3, or OC3 lines then how many people could you host off each of them... T1, T3, and OC3 ect...
thank you,
david

There is no magic number - it all depends upon the resources the websites are using.
You can easily host 1,000 static sites on many servers but at the same time, 4 cpu intensive sites could consume the server by themselves.
Upgrading to atleast 1GB of Ram helps quite a bit.

So what would your best advice be hardware mainly but also other stuff wise for a dedicated server?

You first need to think about:
how many people are you going to host? What types of files are they going to be hosting? Are the domains going to be popular? Pages going to be static, Cgi, Perl, etc?
There are many things to consider. If you want to just host your own website with a couple of visitors get a cheap server. If you want to host many domains but only static pages a P3 should be just fine - make sure to add about 1GB of Ram. If you want to host PHP/MySql, Cgi, etc and have a fair amount of visitors you may want to consider getting a P4 or even a Dual Xeon. Either way get atleast 1GB of Ram if possible (more the better).
There are many things that need to be considered and you really will want to do some research before settling. With our hosting and reseller servers we run a minimum of P4, 2.4GHZ Pentiums with 1.5GB of Ram because there are programs and multiple domains. What you will need will depend on many things and you will want to research it some.
If you don't actually need a dedicated server but could use a large reseller account you can always contact hosting resellers and get quotes - it may be much cheaper in the long run (a good stepping stone) :)

Try for at least 512 RAM. This will allow a lot of room to run a few different items. 1 GB will definately allow a lot of options. As for other things if you are running a lot of forums or heavy database usage then you might want to consider SCSI drives. They will help a lot of writing to the disks. One thing to remember is don't necessarily buy the absolute fastest machine. Buy what you need now plus a little wiggle room. By the time you need to upgrade costs will have dropped and you can get more hardware for less.

The amount of hosts is directly proportional to the size of the sites and the traffic they receive and the type of sites (static web pages versus dynamic content).
A T-1 will flow about 330 GB per month if operating 24 hours a day for a month. That's maxing out the line all the time. One problem with a T-1 line is that when you start piling on the hosts there are spikes of traffic which exceed a T-1's capacity which just slows the server to a crawl. Obviously it *really* depends on what is on the server. 40 sites with 10 pages each is different than running this forum or ebay on the same server...
It also depends on what the server hardware is. Dual Xeons will operate better than a 1 Ghz Celeron...
