I'm in the process of purchasing a domain from a private owner. He wants the deal to go through quickly, so doesnt want to use any kind of third party agents as a go between.

He's agreed to transfer the domain name in adavance of me paying him a cent. So far he's changed all the details of the account to reflect me as the owner:

Registrant:
Administrative Contact:
Technical Contact:
Billing Contact:

Have all been changed by him to show my details. So far so good.....

My question is what happens next? I can see the details have changed, on the Whois database. But as yet I havent been given any passwords to his registrar account. I'm guessing that means that until I have password access, he can just revert the ownership details back to himself, without my consent?

Any help would really be a appreciated

OK heres the update. I've now got full admin rights to the name, so I've changed the password, and login name.

This raises another question. Is it possible to trnasfer the domain to my own registrar? Or am I stuck with the one he registered it with. I've tried requesting a transfer though my registrar but it gets kicked back because its not registered with NSI.

Any suggestions or am I stuck?

It really depends on the registrar. Some are more legitimate than others. I've heard of cases where people have purchased domains and then several weeks later found the domain has been repointed back to the previous owner, due to errors is the "paperwork"

The safest route would be to use an escrow account in the first place, at least that way your creating a paper trail that can be easily followed by the courts should a problem arise at a later date.

I see you posted a few days ago, so I'm sure whatever was going to happen has happenend by now?
