I am looking for a Pacific Western Canada web hoster - Alberta.

I can't find anything like that is out on the western cost.
http://www.superwebhost.com/hosting/

How much does distance effect the time on see the web page?

I want to say this is what I can find who do offer what a standard US company would - looks like a great control pannel. No western province I could find offered a simple control pannel. A confusining one yes, easy no.

Any suggestions or is speed not really my problem? When does distance become a problem?

Thanks.

Bob

Distance shouldnt be a problem, if the host you choose is connected to the right backbone provider.

Hey Bob, normally people do not place too much on distance / location since that is what the internet is all about. But if your website is relevent to Alberta only and you really, really are concerned, then it does make some sense to locate in a local hosting provider - not so much for speed of downloading pages as for reliability of network links.

The internet is made up of many ISPs doing peer to peer agreements and each one is responsible for getting traffic through. The more ISPs involved (and generally the distance) the greater the risk of failure or bottlenecks.

Ask local ISPs about how well they are connected to local backbones and what type of connection types they have and number of backbone links - should be at least two since one may fail. Also, watch out for third party banner ads that you may be running on your site since these could be served from anywhere, probably the US, and add to the download time of your page.
