Quick question. Does it matter who is listed as tech. on the domain registration? Is it okay to put myself? Would that cause a problem of some sort? I am a newbie, obvious probably with the question. Thanks.

It shouldn't cause a problem unless the person you're registering the domain for has a particular reason not to want you there. If/when it comes to a domain transfer they'll be contacting the owner so as long as your customer is registered there things should be fine.

Having an alternative person listed as the tech contact is actually for the better in most cases as it gives people a second option if they need to contact someone regarding the domain.

Thanks for your reply. The domain is for myself and the hosting site suggested I list myself as technical contact, I really thought it was supposed to be them.

No it won't make much of a difference. Most people will suggest you list yourself as you'll have full control over your domain. A few less than honest hosts have been known to list themselves as not only the tech contact but as the registered owner as well. Your own host is probably just trying to avoid any confusion regarding who owns the domain (a good thing on their part by the way). Unless you're using your own nameservers, it won't be too hard to find out where you're hosted and contact them if there is a problem with your domain and someone can't contact you (which is what having them as the tech contact would be for).

Sounds like you're dealing with an honest hosting company, so you should be happy with that :)

I think the technical contact field is practically obsolete now.

It used to be relevant when Network Solutions held the monopoly and Mail-From authentication was the norm. Under that system, either the administrative contact and/or the technical contact could make changes to the domain record. It was also nice, but not essential, for a web host listed as technical contact to receive notifications of certain changes to the domain record.

Under the new system, which mostly consists of username/password authentication with modification notices sent only to the administrative contact, the technical contact field seems to be practically irrelevant.
