Difference between dynamic and static IP addresses

IP address is a number that identifies each user or server on the Internet. Internet includes the sender's and receiver's IP addresses in order to route the packets correctly.

Dynamic IP addresses changes each time you connect to the Internet, while static IP addresses don't change over time.

Residential Internet connections or dialup usually use dynamic IP addresses, while commercial leased lines and servers have static IPs,

The need for dynamic IP addresses arises because of the limited number of IP addresses available in IPv4. there can be about four billion IPs in the Internet, With dynamic IP addressing, there is a pool of IPs that your ISP can assign to users. When you connect to the Internet, your computer is leased one IP address from that pool for a number of hours. When you disconnect, or when the lease expires the IP address is freed and put back into the pool of available IPs. That way, ISPs can have more subscribers than number of IP addresses

Even though the static IP is not always usable, the main difference is considering advantages of the static IP: It will give you:

One. DNS name and Windows name stay always the same and therefore once you log in using (for example) FTP they both can be used.

Two. Some people are not using Windows internet services. They are able to access the static address way better (it is not always true, but is an advantage).

The difference is that static IP addresses do not change, even if you remain offline for a period of time, while dynamic ones can possibly be released and assigned to someone else.
Static is most often used to make running servers on your machine easier, not having to announce every change of your address.

The difference is simple and already in the name. Dynamic Ip address is changing with new network session and static is constant every time

The IP address from your ISP is assigned one of two ways:

Set to an IP address which is unchanged for months or years at a time. This is a static IP address.
Set to an IP which is only good for a limited time, and which is changed according to the policy set by your ISP's DHCP server. This is a dynamic IP address.

A static IP address is an address permanently assigned to a workstation. A dynamic IP address is an address that is used for the current session only.

Static IP addresses are the same every time you connect and dynamic IP addresses may change each time you get connected and are the normal customer access method used by most ISPs or Service Providers. For some dynamic Ip can have change dynamic IP addresses every 24 hours, others less often like monthly or perhaps even longer. All really depends on the ISP' standards on IP address change frequency.

There are advantages to having a Dedicated IP, the main one i think is having the ability to add your own SSL certificate as this is not possible on a shared IP. This is very useful if you intend to sell anything online. Another benefit of using a Dedicated IP is from SEO point of view. A Dedicated IP address will definitely enhance your ranking than having a Shared IP . With dedicated IP you can view your website in the browser directly. I think that is one of the reason people prefer having a unique IP for their site.

I think there's some confusion in this thread. A website must have a static ip (and thus a dns server), so "dynamic ip" doesn't apply to a website. Dynamic ips only apply to us when we log on to surf the net. And that said, I'm on cable broadband internet, and I've found my "dynamic ip address" never seems to change (I think because my modem is always on).

Websites uses static IP though it is possible to change its IP. Dynamic IP remains the same until you switch off your modem.

    ip-address

    Static Ip-address:
Static Ip-address will not change if you refresh the modem or switch off and on the modem again. It's remains same.

    Dynamic Ip-address:
Dynamic Ip-address will change whenever you refresh the modem a new ip allocated for you......

    Hi,

    In IP version 4:

Static IP addressing is where you assigned IP address information (including IP address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, and DNS) manually and permanently.

Dynamic IP Addressing is where you obtain your IP address, basically from a DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) dynamically or automatically. This IP address is not permanent, means that the IP might change later. But using DHCP you can still assign permanent IP address by configuring your DHCP server to reserve an IP address to an end device using its MAC address.

    In IP version 6:

There are two type of static IP addressing: Manual and EUI-64 (we need some time to explain this).
To briefly differentiate, manual is similar to Static IP addressing in IP version 4 while EUI-64 uses the network address itself and the MAC address of the end device.

There are also two types of dynamic IP addressing: using DHCP (stateful) and using Stateless Autoconfiguration (again, we need more time to discuss this).
To briefly differentiate, using DHCP is almost similar to IP version 4 dynamic IP addressing while Stateless Autoconfiguration uses basically the default gateway to assign IP address and the method used is similar to EUI-64.

I hope this gives you additional information regarding static and dynamic IP address.

Dynamic IP's are also more likely to conflict

In home computers especially, its not uncommon to get IP address conflicts, which is why some people use static IP's on local networks.
