Definition :
Virtual Private Servers is means of splitting a single physical server into multiple virtual servers. Virtual private servers are also referred to as Virtual Dedicated Server or Virtual Server and abbreviated VPS or VDS . The practice of splitting single server into multiple servers was common practice in the days of mainframe computers, but has seen a resurgence lately with the development of software such as User-mode Linux and Xen.
Synopsis:
The physical server boots normally. It then runs a program that boots each virtual server within a virtualization environment (similar to an emulator). The virtual servers have no direct access to hardware and are usually booted from a disk image. There are 2 kinds of virtualizations: software based and hardware based. In a software based virtualization environment, the virtual machines share the same kernel and actually require the main node?s resources. This kind of virtualization normally has many benefits in a web hosting environment because of quota incrementing and decrementing in real time with no need to restart the node. The main examples are Virtuozzo (a product of swsoft.com), HyperVM (a product of lxlabs.com), and openvz which is the core kernel of both virtuozzo and hypervm. In a hardware based virtualization, the virtualization mechanism partitions the real hardware resources and no burst and/or real time quota modification is possible. The limits are hard and only modified after a restart. This kind of environment is more secure and is useful in enterprise/commercial usages. Examples include Microsoft Virtual Server, VMWare, and Xen (open source by a group of university students in the UK, developed as an academic project).
Advantages of VPS :
Unlimited Websites Another advantage to VPS is the ability to manage many web sites at a time. You aren?t limited to a single domain and several sub-domains. You can host as many domains as you need or want and link various sites to best affect your bottom line. One great advantage of this is you won?t run into problems with hardware sharing even if you run a hundreds of different sites. Your access to server assets is assured through the use of server-side software such as Apache Virtual Hosts and similar VPS packages.
Root Access
Root access lets you choose which software to deploy ? an especially critical consideration if you already have a huge customer data-base that you want to maintain without transfer issues to a different database. So, if you run PHP with PostgreSQL than the more common MySQL you are free to do so with root access.Again, if you are starting out, these are features you don?t need at the moment but if you plan on growing quickly, consider starting with a VPS package to make transitioning to upper-tiered packages seamless (and painless).
Security
VPS plans isolate clients sharing the same physical disk space minimizing the risk of unauthorized access from hackers as well as other customers. The isolation of your account also minimizes the risk of being impacted by a DoS attack that was intended for someone else.
Flexibility
Some applications require that certain protocols be opened or closed in the firewall. With Shared hosting, custom firewall configurations are not advisable for security reasons but under the VPS, custom firewall configurations are feasible because of the portioning between customers. With VPS, you can close protocols using the IPTables feature.
Regulation
All resources can be regulated in the VPS environment. One customer can not run away with a large share of the resources. You service will run reliably and predictably.

it would depend actually on the kind of service you are intending to provide on a VPS service. if you keep it within limits, there wont be a problem
