Is dedicated server the way to go?

I have an application that currently is designed to access files on a windows file server or NAS. Some of my customers don't want to use their corporate network and would like me to host the file server.

So is a dedicated server the right solution, don't need much performance as band width will be the limiting factor. Also, I need my clients to map the folders as shared network drives (not FTP or WEBDAV/Web Folders), so presumably that pushes me down the VPN route. Most hosting solutions seem to be aimed at web hosting rather that file serving.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

I think your requirements could be met by suc provider as globaltap.com - really stable and professional host with the choise between four operating systems. I supposу you would be able to get a quality slutiond from there.

As well, Try to take a look through the offers of dedicated servers given by hostingsource.com - this is the versatile company which is currently offring some discounts for their dedis. 50%discount code is valid for VPS and dedicated servers.

Well you are in a right place. I would suggest you to choose a dedicated server. You are right about the last point.. Most hosting solutions seem to be aimed at web hosting rather than file serving.

Definitely go with a dedicated server. What you're looking to do shouldn't be done with shared hosting. A VPS may be able to get you going, but the dedicated server offers more stability, security and future expandability.

    Decide based on your needs

Taking a decision to go for a dedicated hosting or servers completely depends on your need & the business that you are in.

If you really think the dedicated servers can solve the purpose, you should go for it or can settle down with the shared mode.

I suppose that would be wise to get started with reseller account for your customers.

Well, if you are looking for reliable windows web hosting provider, I am sure that it will be reasonable for you to trust specialized expert in Windows - aspnix.com - the thing is that the abundance of good feedbacks about this company makes it the most preferable and I advise you to contact their support and ask them this question, and no doubt, they will find appropriate hosting solution for you.

I definitely agree. dedicated server could become the good solution for you. In particular, I recommend you to look at the offers of hostingsource.com, asthis company has good prices and rather high quality and long experience, what is required for quality dedis, moreover, they are currently provide half-price discount code 50%Discount, so I think the advantage is obvious.

I agree that dedicated server is the solution for you. Dedicated servers are a good service for file serving or web hosting.

A dediserver offers better stability and expandability over a VPS, although a VPS also can be considered.

A dedicated server should be just fine inorder to fulfill your requirement. But, considering your statement "don't need much performance as band width will be the limiting factor", you can go for a higher end VPS too. This would save your money.
I would suggest you to get in touch with your web host, let them know about your requirements. Ask them if a higher end VPS would be ok.

I would also support the Idea of dedicated server to go.

Do not want to repet the said words again, so I shall only suggest the source of quality managed dedis, which is exmasters.com. They are attractive not only by the quality and support, but oals by the code DBRAM, wghich exceeds the RAM twice for free.

Really old thread! If it's a small business, I don't think that the business owner will afford to use Dedicated Server. it is better to opt for VPS servers for small business.

Dedicated hosting is the best option when your business has outgrown the resources of shared hosting or in case you have a large online business where you require a lot of dedicated resources for the online management and expansion of the business.
