Keyword in domain name is always preferred but is there any truth in the statement that keyword in domain can have negative effect especially when someone is offering download services.

Not that I know of but in all honesty any domain with a keyword in it can be out ranked anyway...

True! Any domain with keyword in it could be outranked,
however with the keyword you have the advantage.
PS! Don't register: makemoneyonlinetodayand.com
You probably won't get any links from others while no one bothers to type it in
Secondly: you will have no brand recognition.
Instead even this is superb: makemoney88.com or smth like that

It definately helps but not that much. You also want to make sure it doesn't look spammy. BuyDogCollars.com is probably overdoing it but DogCollarsByJake.com would be ok. IMHO.
