What is cloud hosting and why do we use it?

In short; cloud is a cluster of web servers that to the end user just feels like one server or one website. In other words you can say it's a collection of logical pieces such as storage divices, CPU, Memory, etc.....that you can store and configure and optimize to run your application or website or online portal. These logical pieces are noting but a portions of the physical hardware that creates the cloud environment, but overall they are shared.

Also there are three types in cloud hosting; public cloud, private cloud, and hybrid cloud. You can choose any one of them according to your requirements.

In addition, there are many types virtualization technologies available in cloud computing, but mainly Hyper-V and VMware based solution is more popular.

I had no idea that cloud has three types of usage: public cloud, private cloud, and hybrid cloud. Or, are these levels of use. I have also been confused as to the price structure that some hosts are offering. What is this service by the minute charge? Is that something that is a standard?

I see from their website that it seems like a cloud platform, but I'm not sure what that constitutes. I am familiar with web hosting, can someone explain how cloud platforms like Heroku relate to deploying applications in relation to web hosting? Is one a replacement for the other?
